Job Description

The District Attorney’s Office for the 8th Judicial District seeks an experienced Chief Deputy District Attorney, or Deputy District Attorney IV or V with experience, to lead our office’s Special Victims Unit.

The SVU chief position is currently open; however, a chief may be rotated to any unit, including the District Court, County Court, or Juvenile/Diversion/Treatment. A person in the position is expected to manage the staff of attorneys, train and promote the professional development of Deputy District Attorneys, and assist administration with initiatives and programs. A person in this position should also expect to cover dockets as needed, and act as lead prosecutor on major cases.

The starting salary is expected to be $145,000 – $157,000 annually. Those interested should include a cover letter addressed to Matt Maillaro, Assistant District Attorney.

Responsibilities

Specifically, this position:

  • Exercises direct supervision of Deputy District Attorneys and Legal Staff Manager or other positions.
  • Acts as a resource on legal reasoning, statute interpretation, and trial tactics.
    Monitors division dockets to ensure coverage for deputies in trial and to minimize issues surrounding speedy trial.
  • Contributes to the overall quality of the department’s service provision by developing and coordinating work teams and by reviewing, recommending and implementing improved policies and procedures.

We are looking for a candidate that will:

  • Have extensive knowledge of state statutes and general knowledge of substantive case law related to felony, misdemeanor, and traffic offenses.
  • Assess cases for strengths versus weaknesses and aggravators versus mitigators to determine just and ethical dispositions that are within policies promulgated by the District Attorney.
  • Resolve issues that arise within the Chief Deputy’s assigned unit and take appropriate action.
  • Have knowledge of the principles and practice of supervision.

 

Qualifications

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Experience working as a Deputy District Attorney IV, Senior Deputy District Attorney, or similar experience required.
  • Active license to practice law in the State of Colorado required.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License by date of hire required.
