Cops in Court – Alamosa

Speaker

This course focuses on improving the ability of law enforcement officers to communicate effectively and confidently in the courtroom by presenting the underlying rationale and importance of understanding courtroom testimony, report writing, preparation, direct examination, and cross-examination. It includes discussions of the particulars of testimony in an impaired driving trial by the arresting officer, including suggestions on to make his/her testimony more professional, accurate, and convincing. This course also provides for a greater understanding on the part of the law enforcement officer as to how evidence and testimony are presented in an impaired driving case.
Discussions of the underlying goals of direct examination and strategies of cross-examination will enable the law enforcement officer to better understand the nature of his/her own testimony, anticipate what questions might be asked of him/her, and handle the witness stand with confidence. Analysis of the rationale and purpose of cross-examination includes explanations of particular topics of cross-examination and alerts the officer to those matters that might be the subject of his/her own cross-examination, along with suggestions of how to avoid pitfalls. The course is designed to include student participation exercises in report writing and mock direct and cross examination. Feedback on testimony skills, with recommendations on how to more accurately and thoroughly present testimony, will be given by faculty.
