Job Description

The District Attorney’s Office in Larimer County (Fort Collins) is looking for a dedicated, thoughtful attorney to represent our office in problem-solving court dockets. Problem-solving courts offer a meaningful alternative to incarceration, using innovative, collaborative approaches to address the root causes of adult criminal behavior, such as addiction, mental health challenges, and issues faced by U.S. military veterans.

We’re seeking an attorney with a solid background in criminal law who can think critically and creatively, with experience or a strong interest in evidence-based alternative sentencing models. In this role, you’ll work closely with judges, treatment providers, social services, and other team members to develop and implement tailored treatment plans for participants, supporting their recovery and reducing recidivism.

Depending on experience and which courts they will be assigned to, the person hired may be at a DDA I, II, or III. This position is currently partially grant-funded and has a 4-year grant. This position closes Nov. 7, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
The starting salary is DDA I – $79,216, DDA II – $87,138, and DDA III – $95,852-$102,000.

Responsibilities

Specifically, this position:

  • Represents the DA’s Office in problem-solving court dockets.
  • Reviews summons, evidence, and witness statements to determine the following: If a crime was committed, what is its nature, and is prosecution justified?
  • May rotate to traditional criminal docket.

We are looking for a candidate that will:

  • Appear regularly in court, with predictable attendance required.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Build effective working relationships with colleagues and community members.
  • Apply legal principles and practices with a focus on criminal law, court procedures, and rules of evidence, using independent judgment.

Qualifications

This position may be hired as a Deputy District Attorney I, II, or III, depending on qualifications, applicants must a Juris Doctorate degree, or equivalent, from an accredited law school and have a current license to practice law in Colorado or the ability to obtain one within two (2) months of hire is required.

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required for the DDA I will be eliminated from the process.

Deputy District Attorney I no experience is required.

Deputy District Attorney II Deputy District Attorney II positions are generally filled by advancement from the Deputy District Attorney I level.

Deputy District Attorney III – Deputy District Attorney III positions are generally filled by the advancement of a Deputy District Attorney II or similarly qualified candidate.
